the lifestyle is great and it is a nice place to be.”
Tasman’s Mayor: ”Merry Christmas”
It’s the end of another busy
year – a time when we look
forward to great weather,
family time and the festivi-
ties of the season.
It is the time we
can take to enjoy the
place we call home
with many of us play-
ing host to family
and friends who will
undoubtedly see our District is still the
best place to live, work and relax.
It is also a period where we can take
time to reflect on what has been achieved
since the last Christmas. The landscape
and views have changed over the year,
some imperceptibly and others in major
ways. This change will continue as the
District grows as one of the fastest grow-
ing areas in the country.
As a keen mountain biker I will certainly
be taking in Tasman’s Great Taste Trail, as
will many others no doubt. The recent
opening of the section of the trail from
Motueka to Kaiteriteri adds to the trails
and bridges from Richmond to Kaiteriteri
and Richmond to Wakefield enabling safe
cycling on this nationally recognised prize
in the national cycle trail.
For those of you who think the
Christmas spirit is on the wane, I can assure
it is alive and well in Tasman. This year there
will be a number of people attending the
Mayors’ Christmas Dinner free through the
generosity of donations one an anony-
mous donor – to you, whoever you are, I
thank you on behalf of the District for your
kind gesture – and the other from one of
the Council’s long standing contractor
For now, stay safe, and look after each
other. On behalf of my fellow elected col-
leagues and staff I wish you, your families
and friends all the best for a successful year
ahead and a safe and happy holiday.
Mayor of Nelson’s Holiday Message
This is the time of year when Nelson is
arguably at its best and certainly at its
busiest. We welcome the thousands of
visitors who arrive to enjoy our spec-
tacular region and all that it offers; the
wonderful weather; The Nelson Market;
boutique wineries and breweries; artists
and craftspeople; our world renowned
beaches, to mention a few. Many locals
choose to stay put because we know
there’s actually nowhere better to be
It’s also a time to look back and appre-
ciate our achievements for the year; the
introduction of free wifi; completing the
duplicate water pipeline; the upgraded
Maitai Walkway and much more.
I’m proud to have led a Council that
has been innovative in adopting a sugar
sweetened drinks policy and offering
free water at events. I love the fact that
the whole community got involved in our
Gigatown campaign. From grass roots
through to business
leaders, we demon-
strated the connected
and creative spirit that
thrives in our region.
I really look forward
to building on that
spirit as we prepare
for another year
to make Nelson an
even better place.
I’d like to take
this chance to thank
the Nelson Mail for supporting so many
worthwhile community events through-
out the year and telling the Nelson story.
That support is invaluable to so many
On behalf of all the Councillors and
staff, I wish you all the very best of the sea-
son and a safe and happy holiday period.
What does summer in
Nelson mean to you?
Mayor Rachel Reese
