Nelson is the Craft Brewing
Capital of New Zealand, and
it is little wonder given that
this is the only place in New
Zealand where hops are grown
commercially. Ten craft brewer-
ies and thirteen brands of craft
beer are brewed in the area,

McCashin’s Brewery founder
Terry McCashin can be given
high levels of credit for the craft
beer culture that exists today.
Back when Terry started this
craft beer revolution in 1981,
the only beers available in
New Zealand were made by two
major breweries and were lack-
ing in the subtle and distinctive
flavours that Nelson craft beers
are now famous for.
The historic Rochdale Cider
Factory in Stoke is the home
of McCashin's Brewery and
Rochdale Cider is still brewed
on site, along with Stoke Beer,
Palaeo Water, Stoke Ginger Beer
and Lemon Lime & Bitters. The
Brewery is a ‘must visit’ while in
Nelson, offering daily brewery
tours, free tastings, a cafe, bottle
store and bar with 15 taps and
You can also make a day of it
by checking out the Great Taste
Trail, a popular walking and bik-
ing trail which runs behind the
Brewery all the way to Kaiteriteri,

If you’re here for a weekend,
McCashin’s have a market on
every Saturday from 10-3pm,
live music Saturday and Sunday
afternoons as well as $10 wood-
fired pizzas and a free bouncy
castle for the kids.

Bays Brewer y
Having won the supreme award at New Zealand’s
largest home brew competition in 2010, Nelsonian
Dale Holland decided to make his beers available
to the wider public. From recipes designed and
perfected at home, Dale now crafts a range of
four classic styles; his Supreme Gold Medal win-
ner Belgian Pale Ale, American Amber Ale, ESB
and Doppelbock. This summer Dale’s introduc-
ing a pilsner, which will be available in keg only
and if popular, could become permanent, so get
down to your local and give it a try. Dale has also
moved to a 330ml bottle, as well as his popu-
lar 500ml, and riggers will be back in the New
Year. You can try Dale’s beer at Monaco Kitchen,
The Freehouse, Rhythm & Brown, Grape Escape,
3 Rooms, Hopgoods, East St Cafe, Devilles, Bel
Aire, New World Nelson, Fresh Choice Richmond,
Liquorland Nelson and Liquor King.
If it is craft beer you seek then you cannot go

classics such as Gold Lager, Draught and Dark.
