Out and about this
With this year’s Summer Events programme, it’s easier than ever to fill your boots – or should
we say jandals – with an array of free or affordable events on offer, for the young and ‘young at
heart’, throughout the region.
Organised by Nelson City Council, it’s something that the festivals team is really looking
forward to, says Team Leader Axel de Maupeou.
“ This is why we do what we do, to see both locals and visitors alike out over the summer
months and enjoying their home town or their holiday destination.”
Mayor Rachel Reese says the programme is a great way to enjoy summer in Nelson.
“ We’re lucky to live in a very special part of the world and over the summer months the
region really comes alive. Summer Events really highlights what our region has to offer."
In January, things really start to heat up, beginning with the Summer Movies Al Fresco,
screening throughout both Nelson and Tasman from Tuesday 5 January.
The annual Buskers Festival is back again, with the streets being brought to life over four
days in January, featuring action-packed performances by world-class acts.
Perhaps saving the best for last, a major highlight this year will be the return of the popular
Opera in the Park, to be held on Saturday 13 February, with some of New Zealand’s best opera
singers performing alongside Orchestra Wellington.
There will also be performances by Dave Dobbyn, Jackie Clarke, and the runaway hit of the
2014 Nelson Arts Festival, Modern Māori Quartet.
A new initiative is being launched this year, with ‘pay it forward’ tickets, where Opera goers
are able to gift a ticket to someone in the community who otherwise would not have the means
to experience this very special event.
“Nelson really shines at this time of year and we look forward to seeing you here this summer,”
says de Maupeou.
