An invitation to dance
Music and performing
arts for all ages
All for the love of dance
Established in 1967 by Gillian Francis, founder-director of Southern
Ballet and ex-principal of the Royal New Zealand Ballet and several other
overseas companies, the Nelson Academy of Dance specialises in teaching
classical ballet, contemporary and jazz dance.
The tutors are ex-professional dancers who know and love their art and
take great pleasure and satisfaction in imparting this love of dance to
students of all ages, both male and female; currently pupils' ages range
from three years to 25 years.
Principal Gillian says the students "all sit examinations every year with
exceptional results; it's something they're very proud of."
The academy also stages a major production every year at Nelson's Theatre
Royal. These are often full-length ballets and range from traditional to
character style. "They always have beautiful costumes and sets, made by
the parents and students, another thing they're very proud of," says Gillian.
Contemporary ballets involving all students are also performed.
Tutoring ranges from pre-school to advanced levels because it provides
benefits across the board, says Gillian. "Dance is good for discipline,
posture, strengthening the body and providing grace and good
deportment for life."
Tutors are principal Gillian Francis and Amy Kaa along with student teacher
Aleisha Johnson and trainee Abbey Douglas; guest teachers are often at the
studio which is located in the Masonic Temple in Collingwood Street, Nelson.
Gillian says there is an open invitation to come and try out the classes. "All
are welcome to come and try to see if dance is their hidden talent."
